A majority of NYU's full-time continuing contract faculty have signed up to form their union, Contract Faculty United-UAW. Contract faculty are Lecturers, Language Lecturers, Teachers, Instructors, Clinical Professors, Arts Professors, Industry Professors, Music Professors, Research Professors, or Professors of Practice, and they are the fastest-growing faculty group at NYU.
Like tenured professors, they are full-time employees with a wide range of teaching, research, and administrative roles — but most contract professors teach more and earn less, and they don’t have the job security of tenure. NYU contract faculty are coming together to bargain collectively for improvements to their wages and job security, and to ensure that their academic freedom and working conditions are guaranteed by a legally-binding contract.
Contract faculty working conditions are students' learning conditions. Our professors deserve respect and recognition for everything they do for the NYU community, and this pledge is a commitment of your support for contract faculty and their demand that the NYU administration agree to a fair process for recognition of their union.
